Job Title:         Senior Underwriter

 

Reports to:       Underwriting Manager

 

Location:         Brentwood

 

To help manage and lead all underwriting activities relating to appointed Area of Business.  The Senior Underwriter assists in the execution of the Underwriting Strategy and for the establishment of financial plans of the Class and managing all activities of the Class so as to meet or exceed those financial plans.

Undertaking a range of Underwriting Activities at a senior level as well as having technical responsibility for a team of underwriters. Engaging closely with all other functional areas of the business so as to ensure cohesive and efficient understanding and delivery of products and services of the Class.

 

 

Reporting to the Underwriting Manager, the role of Senior Underwriter includes responsibility and accountability for:

Contributing to the development and execution of the underwriting strategy for the Class of Business, working within the Syndicates established risk appetite

Managing a portfolio of new business and renewal business through allocated panel of brokers, selecting and pricing risks in accordance with Underwriting Authority and using appropriate tools

Undertake all Underwriting activities so as to deliver on financial plans and working within financial budgets for the Class of business.

Contributing to the setting of and adherence to our risk selection guidelines when selecting and quoting for business.

Having responsibility for the management and development of a team of Underwriters including formal and informal training, performance management, overseeing day to day activities and provision of guidance and support

Participating in broker/distributor review meetings and contributing to performance review discussions and remediation plans as appropriate

Collaboration with other business segments and functional areas to ensure alignment of Class activities to the wider strategy.

Developing business relationships with the major brokers and other distribution partners in close co-operation with the Senior Underwriter.

Receive and respond to technical queries and referrals from Underwriters, Underwriting Services, Customers and Brokers

Deal with claim referrals within authority limits.

Having awareness of and ensuring adherence to all regulatory requirements, guidelines and working practices – both internally and externally

 

Must have demonstrable relevant technical experience in the Class of Business

Strong experience in executing risk selection and pricing strategies

Strong leadership skills including the ability to lead, motivate and develop a team of people

Must be a team player, willing to take ownership of customer/broker issues and provide support to staff members.
