Our client is a leading Lloyd’s Insurer and is looking for an individual to work with the Chief Underwriting Officer and Head of Underwriting Management to research and evaluate opportunities for growth in the global non-life insurance and reinsurance market. Main Roles: The individual will assess merits of alternative options for expansion of the existing business, including organic change to the existing underwriting portfolio, addition of new teams, expansion into new products or markets, the acquisition of underwriting agencies or other corporate M&A activity and assess the growth via establishment of new regional offices. Typical tasks will include: Researching new markets and underwriting opportunities, assessing the suitability of acquisition opportunities, analysing the potential for new underwriting teams, assessing pros and cons of alternative options, assessing the impact of new products and markets on the existing portfolio, suggesting strategic and tactical alternatives to improve business performance, and identifying the potential weaknesses in the existing portfolio. The individual will be an important part of the Underwriting Management team, in particular with respect to underwriting portfolio management. The portfolio management function involves the management of our client’s diverse underwriting portfolio, the implementation of the underwriting strategy, the preparation and delivery of underwriting plan, the monitoring and management of exposures against risk appetite, the monthly and quarterly performance analysis, providing insightful and timely underwriting, financial and management information, working with all underwriting divisions to maximise cross-divisional benefits, maintaining necessary interaction with the actuarial and financial department, and maintaining appropriate underwriting disciplines and practices across business divisions and offices. Specific ongoing initiatives include: Delivering a more integrated exposure management platform – including achieving a deeper application of catastrophe modelling across all divisions, maximising the business benefits from enhanced pricing disciplines across the business, application of greater business analysis to improve portfolio management, on both gross and net basis, and delivering changes required to underwriting practices under Solvency II. Personal Profile: The individual will have a broad range of skills and experience: widespread insurance industry experience, ideally as an Underwriter but not essential. A strong academic background is required with a good business sense, possibly with business qualification. Strong numerical and analytical abilities are important to the role as well as an ability to assess and distil complex problems or situations into clear alternative options. Also the individual will be a clear thinker with a strong attention to detail and demonstrate a strong initiative and work ethic. The likely candidate could be either… A) An Underwriter with strong account management skills and a technical approach and who has possible had broader experience of the insurance industry or other business ventures. They will ideally also have worked for a small business at some point in their career. B) An analyst, possible from an investment bank or elsewhere in the financial sector, with a good understanding of the insurance sector. The role will report to the Head of Underwriting Management and will attract a salary of up to £80,000 plus an attractive company benefits package.
