Job Description
Reports to: Project Manager/Contracts manager
Direct Reports: Section Managers, Supervisors, Engineers
Overall Purpose - To manage the site production team to achieve the project objectives, and ensure compliance with health, safety and environmental legislation. Ensuring that suppliers/ subcontractors’ works are coordinated and produced in accordance with the drawings and specifications without defects, and in accordance with the Contract Programme. Managing the impact of the works on neighbouring residents, industry and the highways.
Project Delivery - Managing the site production team, suppliers and subcontractors to construct the works safely, efficiently, to programme and within budget. ensure that the works are undertaken safely and in accordance with all HS&E legislation and the site Health, Safety and Environmental Plans. Co-ordinate efforts of site production and commercial teams. Assess, approve and where appropriate, write method statements. Assess, approve, and where appropriate, write risk assessments. Liase with 3rd parties, including, but not limited to: - Neighbours, Building Control Officer, HSE Inspectors
Local Authority (Highways, Environmental Health), Environment Agency, Statutory Authorities, Clerk of Works/ Resident Engineer/ Client Project Manager, Group Safety. Managing Site Logistics, including, but not limited to:- Health, Safety and Environmental Inductions, training and inspections
Mechanical Plant (Cranes, hoists etc), Deliveries, Site welfare facilities, Waste management (skips), Direct labour (general purpose gangs etc), Security, Hoardings/ fences, Traffic management (internal and external of site)
Technical Excellence - To be aware of and maintain an understanding of the contract documents, appropriate codes of practice, standards and specifications. Keep pace with technology and innovative achievements elsewhere. To implement the procedures detailed in the project quality plans and Method statements to ensure finished product is compliant with the contract documents. To correctly interpret information from drawings and specifications and transfer this to the site operatives and sub-contractors. Optimise use of the company IT Systems, to improve efficiency and effectiveness of Project Delivery and bring added value to the business
To constantly review existing procedures and processes to put forward suggestions for improvement. To have a thorough understanding of safety, health and environmental risks and their controls; to be able to implement and monitor the effectiveness of control measures on site. Understand and use the knowledge base within the company. Seek information and advice from Engineering Department when appropriate.
Problem Solving - To anticipate and resolve technical ambiguities/ problems. Assess problems and use all the resources available to develop solutions. Communicate problems upward and request support when necessary. Challenge traditional views and looks for improvements through adopting a new approach
People Management - Lead and motivate the site team. To be aware of the role of all of the team members and ensure that they fully understand their responsibilities. Continually monitor and assess your colleague’s performance – advise and review good and bad performance. Actively encourage and promote a team approach with staff and suppliers to achieve the project objectives. Ensure that the skills within the team are effectively utilised. Encourage the team to improve and develop their skills. Delegate responsibility to the lowest appropriate level to ensure that everyone contributes to their fullest. Manage relationships between colleagues and suppliers (sub-contractors) to ensure that good relationships improve productivity
Remain emotionally detached from disputes and avoid creating conflict. Actively improve the performance of others by providing them with help and support when they need it.
Communication Skills - Communicates effectively in both written and spoken form with colleagues, suppliers and design consultants. Able to communicate with people at different levels. Able to chair meetings and write concise meeting minutes. Persuade and influence others to gain agreement to and acceptance of ideas.
Commercial/ Financial Skills - Understand the financial implications of the methods and sequences of construction that are proposed and planned. Be aware of expenditure against the Prelims budget. Maintain appropriate records on the project and commercial status of the tasks for which he/ she is responsible .
Functional Technical Competencies/Knowledge - HND/HNC/BSc
Chartered Builder or Engineer
Key Experience - Will have relevant construction experience within a supervisory capacity. Should have experience working with multidiscipline teams.
